Fare type notes

Some airlines include only a smaller underseat item with basic fares. Larger cabin bags can require a paid bundle, priority service, or eligible ticket.

How strict is KLM?

KLM publishes 55 x 35 x 25 cm for the cabin bag, and at the gate the sizer frame decides — not your tape measure. Enforcement varies by airport and crew, but a bag within 1 cm of any limit is always a gamble. Hard shells can't squeeze and soft bags bulge once packed — leave yourself a margin.

Small bag or hand baggage?

KLM Basic includes the small bag; larger hand baggage is extra

The 40 × 30 × 15 cm small bag goes under the seat. The larger hand bag measures 55 × 35 × 25 cm including wheels and handles. Economy Light, Standard and Flex include both; Basic requires a hand-baggage add-on.

  • Economy: the small bag and hand baggage share a 12 kg total allowance. It is not 12 kg per bag.
  • Example: 9 kg in the hand bag plus 4 kg in the small bag makes 13 kg, above the combined Economy limit.
  • Check your ticket type as well as dimensions. A bag that fits does not establish a baggage entitlement.

context

Airline context

KLM is a full-service carrier based in Netherlands. Full-service carriers typically include both a cabin bag and a personal item, but weight gets checked more often than size — keep an eye on the kilo limit as well as the frame.
